Trevor Kiernander’s works rigorously propose a formal examination of the space of painting and drawing. Through the association and collision of multiple perspectives and the deployment of overlapping technical approaches, Kiernander explores the fundamental duality between background and foreground, and figure/ground relationships as forms per se. Heavily influenced and inspired by music (especially jazz and cut-up, sampled-based hip-hop, house, and techno), the compositions within each painting play rhythmically throughout their own distorted space, which is often void of a horizon or particular points of perspective. The construction of the paintings could be compared to that of counterpoint in music, where elements are independent, yet dependent on each other to create the whole. The image itself, a possible visible result of Musique Concrète or electroacoustics: the crafting of sonic environments to enhance emotions.
